[2] Face the fact =  realize; accept the truth.

[3] At stake = in danger of being lost. 

[4] First and foremost =  Most importantly

[5] To construe as = to understand in a particular way. 

                               Ex His words can hardly be construed as an apology.

[6] To be in touch with =  to communicate with someone regularly.

[7] To flunk out =  (informal) to have to leave school or college because grades are too poor. .

[8] A wreck = 1. the destruction of a ship; 2. (informal) mentally stressed person.

[9] I didn't see that coming! = I wasn't expecting that! I can't believe it!

[10] To give oneself a break = to stop criticizing oneself.
