[1] Core classes = central courses.

[2] To be not at one's best =  a time when someone's performance is not 100%.

[3] Extracurricular activities = not relating to school work.

[4] Strive =  to apply effort, to try hard.

[5] Spiritual = relating to god or the soul.

[6] Time-consuming =  taking a long time, more than expected or necessary.

[7] To catch someone =  to meet someone who is not prepared.

[8] Holding one's own = to keep one's position despite difficulties; to take care of oneself.

[9] To have second thoughts = to hesitate about doing something

[10] To get something out of the way = to finish something
