{1} Speaking: Question 1

THE FIRST QUESTION

The first question of the speaking part of the TOEFL iBT is the only independent task that you will find in the Speaking part. In this question you will have to choose between two possibilities; your goal will not be to choose the right position, since there is no right position, but to support properly your position with examples and/ or reasons. Typically, 2 or 3 reasons will be enough to have a good score. Of course, organization, vocabulary and pronunciation are all important.

You will see and listen to a question, then you will be given 15 seconds to put your ideas together and get ready to answer. As soon as the 15 seconds are over, you will hear a voice telling you to begin to answer the question; a clock will show how much time remains. You are expected to answer the question, to provide support, and to close your answer in 45 seconds.

Questions happen one after the other. As soon as you finish with the answer to one question, the computer will show you the next. As you can see, you don’t have too much time for brainstorming; you will have to be pretty creative to come up with good answers. But the good news is that the questions deal with simple subjects, so all you have to do is to use your knowledge about everyday facts and your imagination.

The answer

Sometimes an icebreaker may help, particularly if you don’t know what the best way to start is. The next step will be to answer the question directly and to offer reasons to support your choice.

Do not choose one side because you believe it is correct or because you like it; pick a side because you feel you can support that side. This is only a test of English after all.

Keep in mind that you can use the same connectors in many answers. The words in bold type fulfill that purpose

Useful Phrases for your answer:
